Act of Love: Choreographing Arts, Music, Culture, and Politics Into Movement Building

Presentation by Brazil’s Landless Workers’ Movement (MST) Representative Ana Claudia Pessoa.

With the help of literally hundred of poets, musicians, theater groups, and popular entertainers, Brazil’s MST has developed and affirmed its cultural identity as part of its dramatic fight for land, justice, dignity and for creating a new Brazilian society.

Ana Claudia Pessoa is coordinator of the Cultural sector who use poetry, music, theater, and painting in within leadership development and political education of MST members. Ms. Pessoa will provide a report back on the MST’s recent national March of 12,000 members to Brasilia, the nation’s capital, to demand justice for landless workers and the end of agri-business.

The Landless Workers’ Movement is the largest social movement in Latin America organizing a diverse group of working people to occupy large unproductive land.  The movement challenges the landed elite and their allies in mainstream media outlets who have raged a battle to convince the public that agricultural modernizations, genetically modified crops and agro-exports are the only viable solution to solving Brazil’s social and economic problems.

The MST has shown that land reform is in fact a critical path for creating a more socially equal and vibrant civil society.
